Just minutes away from the town center is the Akureyri harbour, where you'll set sail on a 2.5 hours trip of the picturesque fjords of Iceland's north. The most common species are humpbacks and minke whales. Akureyri is the capital of the North and one of the best places for whale watching in Iceland.

Look at the weather forecast beforehand and dress accordingly. It can always feel a bit colder when you are out in the bay. Cold weather suits are provided on board but it's always a good idea to have warm clothes underneath. 

What to bring?

The meeting time is 30 minutes before departure at the ticket office in the Akureyri Harbour. The exact location can be found on your ticket.

What kind of whales will I see on my tour?


The most common species are humpbacks, minke whales, harbour porpoises & white beaked dolphins. Sightings can not be guaranteed. In case of no sightings on our tours you will be offered a free return ticket to try again



Which season is best for whale watching? 


During the summer season (April - October), whale watching in Reykjavík reaches its peak. However, Faxafloi Bay is privileged to encounter whales throughout the year. 

In Faxafloi, there isn't a specific time of day that guarantees whale sightings. Each tour and day brings its own unique experiences, making every moment an opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures up close.



While some tours may offer close encounters with whales right next to the boat, others may witness sightings from a greater distance. In the event that whale sightings are limited due to the whales being too far away, the operator is committed to providing excellent service. In such cases, a complimentary return ticket will be offered, allowing guests the opportunity to try again for a more rewarding experience.



What should I wear on a whale watching tour?


Warm overalls are provided for all Whale Watching tours, ensuring the comfort of guests. However, it is advisable to come prepared with additional warm layers, sturdy shoes, hats, and gloves. Even in Iceland, where the weather can be unpredictable, sunscreen and sunglasses are recommended for sunny days at sea.
