Prepare for the outdoors. Mountain weather differs greatly from the city. Expect unpredictable conditions and pack warm, rainproof attire, regardless of Reykjavík's pleasant weather or promising forecasts. Remember, the crater's temperature remains a chilly 3°C (37°F).

.  Be mindful that it sometimes takes a little time to pick everybody up. If you have chosen a hotel pickup you will have to be ready outside the hotel where the driver can see you.



In the pickup/drop-off list, you will find all available pick-up points. Most of them are located in and around Reykjavík city center. You will be dropped off at the same location. If your accommodation is not on the pickup list try to select the nearest hotel or the closest bus stop.

Pickup & Drop-off

You can either chose complimentary pickup from Reykjavik (recommended) or meet us at the base. 



 is at a ski cabin, located in Bláfjöll (the Blue Mountains). It takes about 30 minutes to drive there from Reykjavík. The name of the cabin is Breiðabliksskáli. 

Please do not take the route that goes via Hafnarfjörður (road nr. 417) as it’s permanently closed.

 Instead take road nr. 1 (the ring road) that then turns onto road number nr. 417. Please find more instructions further below. 



Those who drive themselves to the meeting point have to be there 30 minutes past the set departure time. That’s because 30 minutes past is when the bus will arrive from Reykjavík. For example, if you booked the 08:00 tour, you have to be at the meeting point at 08:30.

Meeting point

: Several departures every day. The first tour is at 8:00 and the last tour is in the afternoon.

: 5–6 hours including pickup and drop-off (about 40 minutes are spent inside the crater). It takes about 4 hours when people drive themselves to the meeting point.

: Moderate (the level of difficulty is 2 out of 5). No knowledge of hiking or climbing is required. It’s not a steep uphill walk, but the surface is uneven in places. The last 10 minutes of the hike are the more challenging, with an elevation of around 50 m/150 ft. This is NOT a tour for those in limited physical shape.

: Approximately 3.5 km (2 miles) each way. The walk usually takes around 45–50 minutes (depending on the condition of people in the group). A guide will be with you at all times during the walk.

: 8 years old. Children (8-years-old and older) that are able to hike 2 times 3.5 kilometers, even in bad weather, are welcome to join the tour. 

It is essential that they are dressed appropriately for the tour.

 The price for children that are 8-12 is 23,500 ISK. Note that we cannot make a refund if it turns out that your child is not able to finish the hike.

The safety of the clients is the number one priority on each and every tour. All equipment and processes have been tested extensively and approved by the administration of Occupational Safety and Health in Iceland. However, like all other activities in nature, this tour has inherent risks and passengers are advised that the tour and its activities are undertaken entirely at their own risk.



It’s HUGE! The enormous size of the crater is both intimidating and beautiful. In more details, the ground space is equivalent to almost three full-sized basketball courts planted next to each other and the distance from top to bottom is a little short of three times the Statue of Liberty. For those more interested in numbers, the crater opening has a diameter of approximately 4×4 meters (12×12 ft). That leads to the 120 m (400 ft) deep, bottle-shaped volcanic vault, measuring 50x70 m (160x220 ft) at the bottom. Volcanic passages continue down to the southwest, to a total depth of about 200 m
